BACKGROUND: Eddie Thawne @ Flash/Arrow Wiki
Eddie was the son of a politician, possibly in Keystone City in the United States of America. He had a bit of a rough childhood - something of an ugly duckling, he was short and fat and very unpopular. This was only exacerbated by the fact his father was a senator who had shut down a factory in his school district that supported many families. Because of this, Eddie was bullied almost constantly when he was in elementary and likely secondary school, and had his ass kicked a lot until a gym coach took pity on him and taught him to fight.
After graduation, Eddie pursued a career with the police, moving through the ranks until he was promoted to detective at a relatively young age and transferred from the Keystone City Police Department to the Central City Police Department. Not long after arriving, he met Iris West, his future girlfriend, when he stopped a man who was trying to steal her laptop. The same night, her best friend, Barry Allen was struck by lighting after an explosion in the particle accelerator at S.T.A.R. Labs - and he was in it for 9 months. During that time, Eddie was assigned to Joe West, Iris' father, as a partner, and started dating Iris, something that had to be kept secret from Joe, something that deeply troubled Eddie, who respects Joe and dislikes lying. After Barry woke up from his coma and found out about their relationship, Eddie was grateful for his silence, but eager to end the charade, enough so that he put his foot down with Iris - and when he did, she decided that they should be open about it rather than dumping him as he'd expected. After Joe was injured on duty, they spoke to him and Joe told them he was tempted to shoot Eddie if he weren't incapacitated - Joe is one of the few people who intimidates Eddie.
The next while was basically business as usual, although more difficult because of the emergence of things that could not be explained, something Eddie would later learn was because of meta-humans. He helped Joe work cases that sometimes seemed impossible, and slowly began to believe that impossible things could be possible, particularly that The Flash existed. During one of the meta-human attacks on the city, Eddie found himself in the precinct during a hostage situation and when the villain turned out to be wearing a bulletproof vest, he was shot and nearly bled out before slipping Iris the gun in his ankle holster. When she shot the villain in the leg, he was taken to the hospital for recovery. And after an incident where The Flash was "wammied" by a meta-human that caused him to be incredibly angry and he attacked Eddie, he began to believe The Flash was dangerous. After a lot of finagling, and no help from Joe, he got permission to start a task force to capture The Flash. This task force put him in a position to work with the team at S.T.A.R. Labs (who he had already met through Barry and Iris) on a mission to try to capture "the man in yellow," a villain with super speed, a mission which failed and which caused Joe to finally come clean about the existence of meta-humans. Around this time, he also asked Iris to move in with him, and she agreed.
Shortly after, a familiar enemy, Leonard Snart, a regular human with a gun that can produce absolute cold, and his new partner, Mick Rory, who had a gun that created absolute hot. After an unsuccessful police sting, Eddie was brave enough to assist The Flash on getting the two to cross the streams of their guns, effectively shutting them down. Later, after an incident where Wells was attacked in his home, Joe asked him to start a private investigation into Dr. Wells and his history, which Eddie agreed to.
Again, after this, things were business as usual again, while Eddie helped Joe look into the meta-human cases until, after the team stopped a set of 'Trickster' villains who threatened to kill everyone at a political rally, Barry and Joe sat Eddie down to come clean about the fact that Barry was The Flash. They also asked him to keep quiet about it, to keep Iris safe, and to help lie to her to keep her from looking into Harrison Wells, also known as the evil speedster, Reverse Flash, who her reporter mentor was looking into before his disappearance. This was something Eddie seriously disliked, believing that Iris deserved to know and would be much safer if she were kept in the loop - it also caused a great deal of strain in his relationship, leading to Iris staying at home with Joe and Barry instead of in their shared apartment. The strain almost broke them up, until Eddie took matters into his own hands and came halfway clean, telling her he was working with The Flash.
After a few more cases, Eddie worked on a meta-human case with Barry while Joe was looking into a lead on Harrison Wells' history. The meta-human was capable of taking the form of anyone he touched, and during a chase he was able to take Eddie's form, and shot two cops on camera. Accused of murder, Eddie was arrested and held pending trial while Barry worked to get him free. After Barry tried to break him out of the interrogation room, Eddie gave him a pep talk, telling him that he wasn't a helpless child this time and that he could get him out the right way. Barry returned him to the precinct and then did clear Eddie's name.
Shortly afterward, as the plot with Harrison Wells thickened, Eddie ended up suffering the consequences when, after failing to get Joe's blessing to ask Iris to marry him, he did it anyhow. Halfway through the proposal, he was kidnapped by the Reverse Flash, and tied to a chair in the bowels of S.T.A.R. Labs, held captive by Harrison Wells, who confessed to being Eobard Thawne, a descendant of Eddie's from the future, who returned to kill Barry Allen as a child and instead killed his mother before being trapped in the past. Eddie was held by Eobard for close to two weeks, and during that time was told that he was the only member of his family to fail to accomplish anything noteworthy with his life, and that he didn't even 'get the girl' - Eobard showed him a newspaper from the future with an article on The Flash written by Iris West-Allen, proof that she would go on to marry Barry and not Eddie.
Even after being freed, this vision of the future and the futility and worthlessness of his own life lingered in Eddie's mind. He broke up with Iris, acknowledging her unspoken feelings for Barry and the fact that their relationship felt like it had always involved three people - Eddie, Iris, and Barry - and that he couldn't keep ignoring the fact that there was something between Iris and Barry. However, after a visit to S.T.A.R. Labs and a conversation with ally Dr. Stein as the team prepared to open a portal that would allow Barry to travel back in time to rescue his mother and Eobard forward in time to go home, Eddie became aware that he was the most unique part of the entire time travel experience. An anomaly, as the ancestor of Eobard, it was sheer coincidence that he happened to live in the same city that Eobard was returning to, and that he was the only one with the power to choose his own destiny. Taking this to heart, he said 'screw the future' and got back together with Iris.
Unfortunately, it was short-lived. After Barry opted not to save his mother and instead returned to stop Eobard from going home, the speedster from the future started to beat Barry, hurting him and nearly defeating him before declaring that he would kill everyone - Joe, Iris, Caitlin, Cisco, and everyone else Barry cared about. Unable to stand the thought of that, Eddie realized that there was truly no such thing as a coincidence, and that his destiny had been clearly laid in front of him. He shot himself in the chest after understanding that, as Eobard's ancestor, if he died then Eobard would be erased from existence. He died in the arms of Joe and Iris, satisfied at being able to be Iris' hero.
PERSONALITY:
➞ Eddie is confident. From how he moves and acts to how he speaks, Eddie's confidence is obvious, and he has every reason to be confident. Eddie is quite young to be a detective, a testament to how well he's performed through school and on the job, and he takes pride in his performance. Aware of where his own strengths lie, Eddie doesn't spend a lot of time questioning his decisions or hesitate to stand up for himself, whether it's to call his girlfriend out on behaviour that makes him uncomfortable, or to assert to his overbearing partner that he can take care of himself.
➞ Eddie is intelligent. There is a reason he rose so quickly through the ranks to become a high-performing detective. Eddie is excellent at reading people, and has a quick, decisive mind. He's good at connecting the dots, picking out patterns, and drawing excellent conclusions about situations and people.
➞ Eddie is very good and very compassionate. Sweet-tempered and good-natured, Eddie is one of the first people at the scene of a crime to comfort victims, aware of the human toll that traumatic events can take. He's open and personable, always ready to make friends and meet new people, and makes every effort to be inclusive, to say hello to everyone in the group and ask about their lives. Despite being the golden boy, he sees himself more as the everyman, and makes efforts to relate to other people. Observant, he notices when the people around him are struggling or suffering and takes the time to offer comfort, advice, or share his own experiences with similar problems.
➞ Eddie has low self-worth, and while he has confidence in his skills, he doesn't have a lot of confidence in his own value as a person. This is likely carried over from a childhood wherein he was bullied constantly, he only learned to fight back when a gym teacher took pity on him. This can get tiring for the people around him, especially when it causes him to jump to the worst possible conclusions - particularly in his relationships, he is prone to assume he has less impact on the people he loves than he actually does, easily believes that people will leave him rather than having confidence that they will stick by him.
➞ Eddie's low self-worth often manifests itself as a crippling hero complex that ultimately results in his own death, when he sacrifices himself to save the rest of the cast. He values the idea of being a hero quite highly, and when he's called a hero cop or does something selfless, he gets obvious enjoyment out of it, it boosts his ego in a way that is not entirely selfless.
➞ Eddie is cocky and competitive. His confidence in his skills can sometimes boil over into a competitive nature, either at work (openly tallying his arrests) or his relationships (challenging Iris in a game of darts). When he's feeling competitive, he can get a little overbearing.
➞ Eddie is a bit of a ditz - while Eddie is street smart and a quick thinker, he's not very book smart. In a series full of scientists and cool nerds, where 'smart is sexy,' this means he can often come across as a little stupid. This is something he's fully aware of, and he will even sometimes joke about it in order to cover his insecurity about it.
POWER: Canonically, while Eddie is an excellent detective with an analytical mind, he is a normal human with no superhuman powers. In Mask or Menace (as a riff on, but not a copy of the comics character Cobalt Blue), Eddie will gain the ability to absorb and transform environmental energy into a blue energy that he is able to control. This ability will consist of three umbrellas energy/power absorption, energy constructs, and healing. When his powers are in use, his eyes will glow blue.
➞ Energy/Power Absorption: Eddie will absorb excess environmental energy as well as energy put out by fellow powers-users when they are activating their powers. At first, it will be passive, an unconscious low-level absorption. As he learns to manage his ability, he will be able to consciously control when and how much energy he absorbs - he can choose not to absorb something, or can absorb a large amount of energy all at once.
➞ Energy Constructs: Using the stored energy he holds inside himself, he will be able to form a variety of energy constructs; primarily shields, projectiles, and what he will call 'blue fists.' The shields will range in size and shape, generally either body-sized and curved like a riot shield, or in the form of a dome connected to the ground (or other flat surface) to protect himself and others from harm. The projectiles will be bursts of energy he can 'throw' from his hands, that will cause damage similar to bullets, with the amount of damage depending on how much energy he uses to create the projectile. The blue fists are a smaller version of the shield that surrounds his fists in the general shape of a boxing glove, which he can use to add power to punches and keep the force of them from hurting his hands.
➞ Healing: Eddie will be able to use the stored energy to heal injuries ranging from small cuts and bruises to third degree burns, broken bones, and life-threatening injuries, with the ability to heal more serious injuries coming only with practice. Out of all three of the umbrellas, this ability will use the most energy.
➞ Drawbacks: Absorbing large amounts of energy is painful and when he absorbs a large amount in a short period of time, it can leave his personal bubble dark, freezing cold, and make it so he can't hear anything approaching. Fast or extended use of his stored energy for healing or constructs can result in fatigue, nosebleeds, and mild burning on the palms of his hands. The extent of what he can do is limited by how much energy he's absorbed, sort of like fuel in a tank - if he hasn't got much of a store to turn into blue energy, he won't be able to perform his other abilities at high levels.
